Anti-Semitism threatens fragile Jewish life in Romania

Ugly scenes of smashed and toppled headstones at a Jewish cemetery in Romania have shocked the country's dwindling Jewish community and prompted international condemnation.
Vandals badly damaged 73 gravestones in the north-eastern town of Husi earlier this month, amid a surge in anti-Semitic attacks across Europe.
"It's a very disturbing event, but it's nothing surprising," said Maximillian Marco Katz, founding director of the Centre for Monitoring and Combating anti-Semitism in Romania.
"It shows that anti-Semitism is alive, it doesn't matter who did it," he told the BBC.
"They didn't knock down two or three gravestones, they knocked down 73 gravestones - that takes some determination and it takes time."
A criminal investigation has been opened.
An elderly community dying out
The Shabbat service is about to start at the Status Quo synagogue in Targu Mures, a city in central Romania.
Standing in the sunlit courtyard, community leader Vasile Dub, 72, expresses a mix of concern and caution.

That is very sad and not wholly-unexpected news my friend PO1 William "Chip" Nagel. Hopefully the age of pogroms will never return.
Of course desecrating graveyards is a far-too-common activity of thugs - ISIS did that throughout Syria and Iraq in areas they occupied.
In this nation cemeteries have been desecrated since before the civil war for varying reasons and by various groups.
To be honest knocking over the tombs of the dead is trivial IMHO compared to killing the living because of their faith.

So many lives taken during the Holocaust that the communities which are left are small and elderly; the young who survived left for Israel or Canada, the UK or the US

Sad that after all these centuries, people still hate others for their religions. That anger/hatred/anti-trust has been promulgated at the Alter/Pulpit/...

It is my understanding that it is not religion that fosters this hate. It goes back many centuries. The Jewish people were declared by God Almighty to be the Apple of a His eye. They have been hated for this over the course of history because it is instilled in the children from a young age. Try to get an Arab to truthfully state why they hate the Jews and I would proffer that they could not articulate a truthful answer.
