In 2003 my husband and I were in Carmel for a weekend visit. We walked into Miss Day's hotel to check out its accessibility for my mom who had become a quadriplegic the year before in an accident. My parents had honeymooned in Carmel in 1951 and often celebrated anniversaries there, and I'd heard that her hotel was one of the most accessible in that area. The lobby looked good but it was a tad busy so we walked back down the front stairs to the street. As we started down the sidewalk a man who had just stepped out of a snazzy sports car asked if he could help us and caught off guard I briefly explained why we had gone inside. He was so friendly and invited us to follow him inside, introduced himself as, "Terry", and showed us the lobby, the sitting room, how she would have access from the back garden and the (occupied) room they would give her so she would have an accessible bathroom and be able to use the Hoyer lift. He gave us room rates and explained how we could get a discount on additional rooms for a caretaker to stay nearby to assist her and dad. He sent us off with information and hope that we could plan a trip soon for my parents. It wasn't until we went online later that I realized we'd been shown around by Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher. He was so kind, understanding and helpful.

LTC Greg Henning, Doris Day owned a hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea called the Cypress Inn. We never stayed there, but did tour it once. It's quite beautiful and historic, and is pet friendly, which was what Doris Day was all about in later life.
May she rest in peace.
