Good Friday Afternoon RP!!!
I found a great song by accident this afternoon and thought that I would share it with all of you for a Friday afternoon interlude serenade! I know that most of you will recognize this song by a group called "10cc"!!!

"The band initially consisted of four musicians – Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme – who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the name "10cc" in 1972. 10cc featured two songwriting teams, one "commercial" and one "artistic". Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop songwriters, who created most of the band's accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an "art school" sensibility and cinematically-inspired writing."
"Every member of 10cc was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer, and the writing teams frequently switched partners, so that Godley/Gouldman or Creme/Stewart compositions were not uncommon. After Godley and Creme left the band in 1976, Gouldman and Stewart were the main creative forces behind 10cc. Stewart left the band after 1995, and Gouldman continues to lead a touring version of 10cc."
"Most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport and Strawberry Studios (South) in Dorking, with most of those engineered by Stewart. 10cc was co-managed by Ric Dixon and Harvey Lisberg at Kennedy Street, who had represented the individual members of the band since the mid-1960s."

1. But how was it made? And what was the song about? Who whispered the famous 'big boys don't cry' line? Here's the official story behind the song:
Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her, 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah", it's not gonna mean anything eventually'.

2. The rest of the band hated it
Originally conceived as a bossa nova song with guitars, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme were not fans, particularly Godley, who told him to abandon the idea completely. It wasn't until they heard staff members humming the tune that they gave it another shot.
3. How was it made?
a. Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, creating a 'choir' of 48 voices for each note.
b. Creme suggested they could keep the voices going for an infinite time by using tape loops. Stewart created 12 ft long loops by feeding them at one end through the tape heads of the stereo recorder, and at the other end through a capstan roller fixed to the top of a microphone stand.
c. Stewart played each loop through a separate channel of the mixing desk, turning the desk into a musical instrument. He also put gaffer tape across the bottom the channels, making it impossible to completely fade them down, creating constant background vocals.
d. Only a few instruments were used: a Fender Rhodes electric piano played by Stewart, a Gibson 335 electric guitar by Gouldman, and a bass drum sound played by Godley on a Moog synthesizer.
e. After the song was finished, Godley felt there was still something missing...
Lol remembered he said something into the grand piano mics when he was laying down the solos. He'd said 'Be quiet, big boys don't cry'. Heaven knows why, but I soloed it and we all agreed that the idea sounded very interesting.

4. The whispered voice
"Just at that point the door to the control room opened and our secretary Kathy [Redfern] looked in and whispered 'Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you.' Lol jumped up and said 'That's the voice, her voice is perfect!'."
5. It almost wasn't released straight away
Mercury Records signed the band to a five-year deal based purely on the song. However, the label weren't sure about releasing the epic song as a single. Thankfully, many influential figures in the music industry demanded that it be released, and Mercury relented. 10cc had to edit the song down to four minutes for radio play, but many stations played the full version anyway.
6. It reached number one in the UK
It gave 10cc their second number one single, in June 1975. It also reached number two in the US.

LTC Stephen F. Stephen, this the truth, I understood the song that the meanings made it clear *after 40 years*. And then it clicked. The stain was the pain HE felt at losing her. I never connected the dots, so to speak, and the lyrics made sense. And the musics somber mood is just right for the song. Amazing!!! Some of us don't play with a full deck. Uno that is..
