Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is one of my favorites and is titled "M16 Close Up." Messier 16 (M16 and IC 4703, The Eagle Nebula) has also been dubbed the "Pillars of Creation." The dense, dusty columns rising near the center are light-years in length but are gravitationally contracting to form stars. M16 is about 7,000 light years distant and located in the constellation Serpens.

A Quick Look at the Eagle Nebula (M16)

New stars form in clusters containing large amounts of dust and gas, including structures like the Pillars of Creation. A newly forming star is located near ...
