I'll stick with .308 or 30.06. Are the ballistic characteristics that much different from 6.5mm to a 6.8mm to a 7mm?

You can see from this article that the two 6.8 rounds they compared are very different. It's all about powder charge, bullet weight and shape. I only bring up the 270/6.5 because that is where the Military is headed as the basic Infantry Rifle. Probably going to be on an AR platform still.

I would recommend the new 8.6 blackout but right now it’s pretty expensive

All in All, ones opinion is best for them, my caliber of choice is, What's on hand at the time, works every time.
Round placement is key, that's why people have to shoot multiple times, at one target.
