Cashe, 35, of Oviedo, Fla., was deployed to Samarra, Iraq, with the 3rd Infantry Division when the armored Bradley Fighting Vehicle he was in rolled over an improvised explosive device on Oct. 17, 2005. He was slightly injured by the explosion and drenched fuel, and realized the vehicle’s fuel cell had erupted and the vehicle had burst into flames.

His uniform was completely burned away, but he demanded that his troops to be medically evacuated first. He went into the burning Bradley and rescued 6 soldiers. He sustained third degree burns all over his body. Asked why he did what he did, he replied the soldiers were too young to meet their maker. The burned soldiers were sent to the Brooke Army Medical Center because it specializes in burn victims. He kept inquiring about his soldiers. He loved his soldiers. Three would ultimately die in that hospital, then it was his turn to leave the world. I have worked with Platoon Sergeants like SFC Cashe. They were tough, fair, aggressive, and loved their soldiers. You can't ask for anymore.
