Well, I'm for anything that takes a swipe at the 9mm's ascendancy in the ammo market. I've been considering the 5.7 for a couple of years but haven't acted on it as long as my .380 LCP continues to function as advertised. Even if I did own a 5.7, I'd probably not carry it on any kind of regular basis as self defense with something in the .22 caliber range means you have to get a lot closer to the attacker than I want to be, although the 5.7's smaller faster bullet gives you some room to maneuver. I'll never know until I take one to the range, so this is all just a mental exercise.

The FN5.7 is basically a shortened 5.56. The ballistics are relatively impressive compared to a 9mm. I'm going to wait until I see if other ammo manufacturers are going to produce the round, it's scarce and expensive around here.

SGT (Join to see) - It shoots with a flatter trajectory, the magazines hold more, it will penetrate 3a body armor (with the right bullet) and generally penetrates better. Brother Rick, in my opinion, any caliber works, if it makes a hole in the body, it works. I've seen twice, a 22cal. put the person in the ground, even a speargun once.
But you kind of hit it on the button, if you only like shooting at a far range, and if your caliber is right for you, than, by all means, stay with it.
Myself, I like up close, maybe it's because, of my working as a COP for years, and always having to stand face to face with any threat.
I do shoot alot at 30 feet away, at a 8 inch target, if you can do that, than anything less than 30 feet is easy. Why 8 inches, well the norm size of a head is 8 inches, and or, the center of body mass.
I also shoot at 100 feet away, with my hands guns, just to give confidence to the other younger shooters, that happen to be shooting with me.
There is alot of talk of caliber, gun platform and etc., and it's all fine for them, but in my opinion, honestly, "Round Placement is King".
While in the Army infantry, I'd rather have a 105 round used, than my 5.56 out of my M-16, at the enemy.
Think about it, the Airforce takes a 1000lb bomb, and uses it, to kill one guy, Hey it works.

SGT (Join to see), my philosophy is simple, carry what you can consistently hit with, period. I don’t carry my 22LR Ruger Mark II, it is to big to conceal and a pain in the butt to clean. But, I am very proficient with it. The one gun I am most consistent with is a Rugger New Model Blackhawk 357 Mag. Great gun for hunting, not self defense, unless it is the only one I can get to. I carry 9mm, 45 ACP and 38 +P. Proficient with all and they are all quite concealable!

Maj Robert Thornton - I'm with you there, I keep proficient with all my handgun too. I do like carrying one of my 3" barreled S&W 357 revolvers, but I can carry anyone of my handguns, it's just what I like at the time.

I emailed Ammo.com and asked for a comparison of 5.7 in a PCC vs .17 HMR. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the 5.7 will be more effective than a .22LR or Mag. I want to know how it holds up to a round that's more in it's wheelhouse.

SGT (Join to see) - The .17HMR is a necked down 22 Mag. The FN5.7x28 is a necked down and shortened .223/5.56. The nearest existing round that I know about would be the 22 Hornet. The Hornet got around 2300 FPS in a long barrel Thompson Center Contender, I would suspect that would put it right in the same wheelhouse when fired from something like a Ruger 57.
