Saw this Rick ... would have to dig into it more before I form a strong opinion. My first reaction was "I'm moving to Washington state!" (earned income equivalent $122,653).

Looking at the labor force participation rate*, that state has had a sharp decline since about March (roughly 400k individuals) which would back up the report. However, Montana on the other had has a sharp increase since January and only recently shows a steep decrease.

There's no doubt that someone not working today is getting more money from the government than they would before the pandemic (assuming their situation would be the same) ... but a number that high ... if true, just makes the working folks feel like schleps.

Personally, I think ALL (or at least the vast majority of them) of the pandemic placed monies should go away. I'm willing to believe the people when they say that the economy is strong .. ok.. then why do you need a large check to someone to not work - go out and get a job. That's how everyone did it (well, most) before the pandemic.

No need to wonder why people don't go back to work.

1. Unemployment is based on previously earned income.

2. How does health insurance subsidies add to income?

Covid and much of the Post Covid addition to Unemployment was not based on income, in some cases it was just sent to all the people with a SS card. I was furloughed during Covid and collected maximum state unemployment, which in this state was $550 a week, which was less than half my take home pay. The Federal unemployment subsidies doubled that amount and put me just under break even. My wife was also on unemployment at the time, a pittance since she had been a part time employee for a number of years, the Federal Kicker for her was about three times her unemployment.
I wasn't called back from the furlough period, something I suspected was going to happen , so I already had another position lined up when it ended, and my wife started a full time position shortly after. OTOH, it took me 14 weeks to get my first unemployment check. None of the stimulus money was based on what we earned.
Market Place subsidies mean that those that get them get very significant breaks on health insurance premiums, some to the point of no premium. Or they get the tax credit for the end of the year. Either way it means more money in the pockets of those that use the system.
