A friend of mine was burgled and lost a Colt 1911 .45. He reported the loss including the description and serial number of the weapon and forgot about it. Years later, he received a call from the police asking him to confirm the serial number. After doing so, he was told he could pick up the pistol at their headquarters at his convenience. When he picked it up he was told that it had been used in a crime. The trial had ended in conviction and it was no longer needed as evidence. When he asked about the nature of the crime, he was told "homicide." When he returned home, he carved a notch in the handle and put it away.
