COURT BATTLES
1.) NRA promises to reform charitable arm in new settlement with DC attorney general
04/17/24 08:30 PM ET
The National Rifle Association (NRA) settled a suit with the D.C. Attorney General’s Office on Wednesday, concluding a three-and-a-half-year case by promising to reform its troubled charity arm, avoiding a trial.
Prosecutors said the NRA Foundation misused more than $10 million in tax-deductible donations, illegally funneling the money into its parent organization for political activity. The case was set to go to trial April 29.

2.) N.R.A. to Overhaul Charity It’s Accused of Using as a ‘Piggy Bank’
The gun group settled with the District of Columbia’s attorney general, who said it had misused tax-deductible donations. The N.R.A. denies all wrongdoing in the case.
“For years, the N.R.A. made liberal use of the foundation’s coffers to prop up its own dwindling fortunes. The attorney general’s office said the practice illegally drew on charitable donations, which are not supposed to be used for political activity.
The N.R.A., in a statement, portrayed the settlement as a victory, saying it had “proved that all funds” taken from its foundation “were applied exclusively in furtherance of its charitable programs and that there was no misuse” of resources.”

* Former NRA chief Wayne LaPierre misspent gun rights group's money, owes more than $4M, jury finds
The longtime head of the National Rifle Association, Wayne LaPierre, misspent millions of dollars of the organization’s money, using the funds to pay for an extravagant lifestyle that included exotic getaways and trips on private planes and superyachts, a New York jury determined Friday.
The jury ordered LaPierre, 74, to repay almost $4.4 million to the powerful gun rights group that he led for three decades. It also ordered the NRA's retired finance chief, Wilson Phillips, to pay back the group $2 million.
Jurors additionally found that the NRA omitted or misrepresented information in its tax filings and violated New York law by failing to adopt a whistleblower policy.
LaPierre sat stone-faced in the front row of the courtroom as the verdict was read aloud.
