Well, I'll bet the writer lives very near, or has friends (make that acquaintances) who own pistols and rifles that have never been used to make her fearful. Why I'd bet if she were being accosted by an individual intent on doing criminal things to her, she wouldn't be fearful of an armed citizen saving her ass.

My mom's ancestor was in the first unit and they were required to take their weapons everywhere including to church.
