My father-in-law was born in upper Wisconsin. The building that stored his birth certificate was burned down. He didn't have one. Worked to his advantage since he worked 10 years past his required retirement age.

Father born in 1920 on Guam, they had no birth certificates, they depended on the census, baptismal church records, or the village nurse records who deliverd babies then.

SGT Carl Blas - Father born in the new state of Oklahoma, 1911, on a farm, no attending doctor. Had trouble his entire life getting driver's license, etc. Things got a little easier after serving in the Army during WWII, but not a lot.
