APOD: 2026 January 19 – CTB 1: The Medulla Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the January 19, 2026 edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).
Tucked away near the constellation Cassiopeia is a supernova remnant dubbed the Medulla Nebula (aka the Garlic Nebula). Researchers believe a star exploded some 10,000 years ago, and if you are able gather data for 84+ hours using a telescope and other photographic equipment (narrowband filters that capture specific infrared emissions from hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur ions), you can end up with today's APOD.
Here are the notes that the astrophotographer posted on Astrobin (my additions are enclosed in []): "This was quite a long and fun project! I collected many hours of Ha [hydrogen] and OIII [oxygen] back in October, to reveal the very faint gas clouds of this supernova remnant. Individual subs don’t show much, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I did add some OIII later on, which adds a bit of a yellow lining in some of the clouds."

The resulting supernova remnant named the Medulla Nebula is quite amazing in and by itself... It looks like a brain artifact from the supernova, but more than that, it makes for a challenging study in the Universe's evolution as a microcosm of the universe as a whole... Magnificent, Bill!
