PO1 William "Chip" Nagel What a military. The Army wants to own ‘close support aircraft’ and now they a ‘fleet of boats’ to unload supplies.
Why cannot the Air Force furnish ‘close support aircraft’ and why can’t the Navy supply ‘small boats’?

The USAF only thinks fast-mover fighter jets are cool enough. They don't want the other less sexy missions. The Navy doesn't want the intra-theater mission. Our LCUs are crewed by 24 personnel who do everything aboard, from cooking meals to maintaining the engines and all systems aboard. The navy couldn't run a vessel with only 24 people; every job on their vessels is done by a specific MOS/Rate. For example, in the Army, the 88Ls are responsible for the engines, generators, water systems, sewage systems, fuel systems, the refrigerators and cooking appliances in the galley, and pretty much everything mechanical, electrical, etc. on the vessel. We also participate in firefighting and running the Fast Rescue Boat (FRB). The Navy couldn't and wouldn't require one Sailor to be responsible for all those jobs.
