Thanks for reminding us about the Annexation of Austria 78 years ago SP5 Mark Kuzinski. Many people seem unaware that one of the reasons Hitler rose to power was his leveraging the German people's hunger for unification. After all it wasn't until 1871 after Franco Prussian War that Germany was 'allowed" to unite. When the Austro-Hungarian empire was dissolved in 1918 the possibility of Austria and Germany uniting became a possibility as well as the possibility that the German speaking area of Czechoslovakia would be brought it.
Hitler was able to achieve these "reunification" actions because other nations were still reeling from the losses of WWI coupled with the fear of Germany military and economic power.
The annexation of Austria also gave rise to the story of the Von Trap family singers which grew into "The Sound of Music."
