The story I heard is he uncovered it, had it reburied, contacted his backer, then redug and opened the tomb.

I can imagine the stench of opening a 200 plus year old coffin must have been pungent to say the least.
In 1923 English archaeologist Howard Carter had the nearly unique modern experience of opening a seals sarcophagus. Ancient grave robbers had opened the vast majority of them centuries ago.
The Finding on an intact King Tut funeral crypt was truly amazing. This scene influenced so many movies from Raiders f the Lost Ark to the Mummy movies.
