The bunyan tree was obstructing line of sight in that area of the JSA. The DPRK set an ambush and the rest is history. I recall my NCOIC refusing me to visit the tree when I was assigned to the JSA, because of the possibility of a repeat performance with me and an escalation of hostilities that would have played the JSA like a speed breaker for the nKPA forces. Camp Liberty Bell, ergo Boniface would survive only a bit longer. I still wonder about such myths.

I miss the old name on my 1974/'75 assignment, "Camp Liberty Bell." Now, it's called Cp Bonifas. Camp Custer also went to the ROK Army after we moved in early 1970. Sorry if this sounds non-germane to the article, just got a little nostalgic.
