He wasn't named old man Rigley... I wasn't in college when he died. It was more than a few summers, it was about 11 years. From the time I was born when he put a genuine silver dollar in my hand. He was my fathers best friend, and my 2nd father. He wasn't in the Navy as I recall...
In my true story his name was John Sawyer born in 1895. His dad was a red headed Irishman and his mom was as black as a Memphis, Tennessee night. I was 12 living in Michigan when he passed. The best thing was going to Uncle Johns for the weekend across the alley and down the street in Tucson, Arizona off Jason Vista. He was one of my hero's when I was younger even though he was a shoe repairman in 1970 off Speedway near Tucson's Capin's Carwash.
John came out West with my dad in about 1961 after a 3 foot snowfall in Michigan. The time he had a major stroke, I was in the passenger front seat going over Golf Links bridge after we moved to 28th Street. I dont know to this day how he made it to my place, but he did...Ambulance was called, he was admitted, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, in 1971 we moved back to Michigan.
By 1972 John was called... I know he had a bible with a well worn cover. By 1974 my mother passed away close to her folks. We retuned to the place John, my dad and mom went partners in some land...back to where John is laid to rest. Deming...
He is buried in Deming, along with my older brother. I've visited him, but not nearly enough. I shoulda become a doctor or a lawyer like he encouraged me to do... and never a cop.
Yeah I'm overdue to visit them...recon Ill make the time this week...
