We do not know what words were exchanged between Mr. Black and Sheriff Clarke. From both accounts, we do know that Mr. black had an axe to grind with Sheriff Clarke; and furthermore, never having met Sheriff Clarke, Mr. Black went out of his way to communicate that attitude, either by word or by demeanor, toward Sheriff Clarke.

My guess, Sheriff Clarke didn't like what was said by Mr. Black, or Mr. Black's attitude and followed the "see something... say something" formula for airline safe travel. The Sheriff's Deputies showed up, conducted a cursory investigation, then sent every one on their way.

Had Sheriff Clarke ignored Mr. Black's actions and sometime later showed up in a high rise hotel shooting people at a Country Western concert or some other violent act; I am quite sure there would have been a rush to judgment "Why didn't Sheriff Clarke get this guy on the record?"

I believe your pronouncement of "Another Criminal thug caught by his E-mail" is premature, and most likely "wishful thinking."

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - My son-in-law was a Lansing Police officer, he detained and interviewed many a person, in order to determine if a crime was or was not committed. He also knew better than to conduct any fraction of investigation where it might be perceived that he was involved in the incident. At that point he ceased to be a police officer and became a witness.

Maj John Bell - He can not do so without proable casuse. In this case it was becasue a thug was offended. Read the Sherrifs orders again, he told them to detain him if he was a asshole, that order is criminal since being an ass is a protected right

There was no appearance of criminal action and if was it did not happen in Clarke's jurisdiction.

Cops rightfully can detain people for questioning, but the need for probable cause for tht detention and questioning is always there.

Ask your son-in -law if it was lawful for him just to pick people randomly on the treat to detain and question,

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - Random, no... If threat was communicated by word or demeanor... Yes! Unusual behavior, not in and of itself criminal in nature, but by virtue of location or circumstance was sufficient to stop and question. Questioning is part of investigating, which is part of determining probable cause, which may lead to arrest. Sometimes a little investigative work is necessary in order to determine probable cause.

Proactive policing is the practice of deterring criminal activity by showing police presence and engaging the public to learn their concerns, thereby preventing crime from taking place in the first place. In contrast, responding to a complaint after a crime has been committed is reactive policing.

I Clarke's instructions to his deputies was any indication of a threat of any kind made. Without any indication that a threat was made there us no problem cause. If there was a threat made on the aircraft TSA and the FBI would have the authority to investigate not Clarke's deputies. Read what he told them to do and then tell me how that was investigating a likely crime. If there was suspsion of a real crime or real threat why did he not give that information to someone with jurestdiction. Instead he gave it to people who could legally do nothing but harras.

You judged a man without knowing all the facts. Your comment is hyperbole.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I've always liked Clarke, but he's clearly in the wrong here for his instructions to his subordinate, "no arrest unless he becomes an asshole."

The facts that are on record are criminal. Did you read his instructions?

Those with fantasies keep dreaming, yet nothing ever happens, they are like small children waiting for folks to get in trouble as the ring their hands while smiling.
