Just some thoughts:
- China is using the belt and road initiative to make inroads with various countries. I think China has an advantage as she has purchased long-term leases to ports around the world.
- WWII showed that islands must be supported by ships for logistics and firepower. Japan was over extended due to their huge footprint. The Pacific became Japan's Russia. Unsupportable.
- I think an important variable will be the efficacy of smart cluster bombs that can destroy large armored or perhaps vehicle formations at one time to include the efficacy of CAS. However, much of that capability is contingent upon air superiority. In WWII the Japanese naval aviation tapered off as we destroyed her aircraft carriers.
