CPT David Christian. Said to be the most decorated Soldier in Vietnam. Also big into the Vietnam War Memorial. Wrote an autobiography in the late 80's I think it was.

He is indeed, SFC Jack S., and I'm chagrined to say that I did not know of him.

I could be wrong about this, SFC Jack S., but I think there are a number of soldiers that were not trained SF at Fort Bragg, but were assigned to one of the groups in Vietnam at the time, and based on missions, exploits, etc., their "work" was ultimately considered SF and they were awarded a long tab retrospectively if the soldier applied to receive it.

I don't want to bust your bubble, SFC Jack S., but SF training has evolved into a much more sophisticated animal now than when I went in 1970! There was no SFAS. I went straight from jump school to Fort Bragg. After that, for enlisted, it was Phase 1 (4-5 weeks), SF MOS (time based on MOS & I was weapons, so that was 8-10 weeks). Phase 2 after that (6-8 weeks) & you were a qualified SF soldier. I used estimates for time, 'cause I really can't remember how long each phase lasted.
Qualified SF troopers were identified by the green beret with a full flash (as opposed to a candy stripe-partial flash). If you left SF for another duty assignment (SF was not necessarily a career path then), others never even knew you were SF unless you had a right sleeve SSI.
I didn't get my SF tab until they were introduced in 1984. Sent all my stuff to Bragg, and a set of orders came back in the mail, awarding me the tab.
Hell, I don't think I could pass what you guys go through now!

It is interesting. Kudos indeed. Looks a bit like he was late to the photo shoot and just popped them on the best he able. :)

I had a Naval Officer at Logan on his way to a formal and he had forgotten his bow tie. When he went to change he returned to my lovely bow tie I made him from a kleenex. I said "...or there is a Macy's in the area in which your event is located!" We had a laugh & he dashed out.
