The reserves/guard is never meant to be a full time job with benefits unless you are AGR.

You aren’t the first sailor or soldier to get placed in an active duty environment for annual training. I know several. I also know several who did multiple mobilizations and deployments. It’s the job. It’s what you signed up for when you raised your hand and took an oath.

Sometimes the military augments your life and works in harmony with your civilian life. Sometimes it does not. Many of us have missed birthdays, weddings, funerals, family events, graduations, vacations, etc. because the military side had dibs on those dates. It’s the job.

The reserves and the guard are not structured to be a primary source of income. I don’t fully want to say “beer money”, but yeah, beer money. They rather assume whatever work a SM has outside is the primary source of income and that it is adequate to deal with whatever life is happening outside of that service.

Having said that, if you are living in poverty outside of service it will likely catch up to you during duty. I don’t know if the reserves can do much about it as their primary focus is the mission and they don’t have much impact outside of your duty time. I think there are likely some larger societal issues a play on why you were below the poverty line in the first place.

But both the guard and the reserves suffer from the intersection between what you are doing when you are active vs, the rest of your life and if anything goes sideways, what caused it.

I told the NCOs to take of the soldiers an to mentor junior NCOS. Soldiers needed to take care of eavh other. I put a great task upon the E-5s. Since they were where the rubber meats the road, I told them to know about the soldiers and their families. They would be the first of defense when soldiers were struggling. I also told the to inquire about the weekend plans. Do the plans make sense and are safe?
