Want to get even more sad? Look at Lebanon. Beirut was the Las Vegas of the Middle East. My dad went Air Force TDY to Saudi Arabia in 1966 and took tons of slides which I still have. A beautiful place prior to all the shenanigans. Amazing how sectarian violence/religious warfare can destroy a land/culture/people.

Wow thank you for sharing that. I will have to look at that area as well. And yes, extremely sad. Would love to see some of the pictures your dad took. How exciting to have that history within arms reach ... :)

I'm still scanning everything. Even funnier is that dad was in Jerusalem less than a year before the Jordanians lost it to the Israeli's. So he has tons of slides on that as well.

Link seems to be broken but I can say that I do recall having learned some facets about pre/post Iran because of the hostage crisis and the 79 take over of the Shah. We also touched on Afghanistan during grade school due to the Soviet incursion and US involvement. Both countries were described as monarch-like governments before the event occurred. It was all very high level but still taught. Through my years in the Air Force I got even more due to the locations I was headed to and the types of jobs I would be performing. Afghanistan used to be a somewhat popular/exotic tourist location for a period of time before the Soviets moved in. At one time during the Soviet occupation they even had the 4th largest Air Force in the world. Of course most who have been there will note the many boneyards thanks to the Taliban who I can only assume did not believe in retaining Air Power.

I'm trying to find the original link as some can see it but others like yourself can't? And no, the Taliban only seem interested in destroying Air power, amongst other things.
