I concur with FORSCOM Commander Gen. Robert Abrams's statement “Some may ask, why all the emphasis on readiness? And why all the emphasis to decrease post-mobilization time for the Army National Guard and United States Army Reserve? Because contrary to some people’s opinion, we are not in an inter-war period.” SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL
Readiness to fight helps ensure that we won't be drawn into a conflict unawares or unprepared.
I expect everybody recognizes the truth of "No more Task Force Smiths."

His words do not correspond with the actions and decisions made by Congress and DoD unfortunately. History shows us we always draw down our forces after major conflicts and redefining of the NMS. Truth is we are in transition and major combat operations had been officially declared over by two different presidential administrations. I do question how GEN Abrams defines "readiness" because with a smaller force (active and reserve) today we are still struggling to balance the budget for our military and still train, maintain, and sustain. Increasing numbers and demanding a bigger budget just so we can "surge" when time comes is fiscally irresponsible. Hard to plan to defeat Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea when our leaders cannot decide how many BCT and BN formations to build around.

In a world as dynamic as the one we are living in today it is in the utmost importance to maintain a highly trained force in readiness. Long gone are the days of the maritime or peace-time forces that just sit around playing barracks "games" like field-days or GI parties and in-ranks inspections every Monday and Friday morning and only going off to NYC, JRTC, 29Palms or some other training just for part of war games or friendly forces rotation in an allied nation.
