The sinking of the Lusitania and Housatonic prompted my grandfather, Sgt. Harold Wilson Chaney, U.S. Army to enlist and go on to fight in Belgium and near the Argonne forest with the AEF (American Expeditionary Force) during WWI. Interestingly, he rarely, if ever spoke of the war to anyone, including his son Donald, who served in the Navy in the latter 1950s except to explain the scars left on him due to a German grenade exploding next to him during battle. I was the only one he spoke to openly about his actions during the war, but only after I became a sergeant of Marines in 1984. The look of astonishment on my grandmother's face was priceless. That golden treasure of a memory has left me honored and humbled every time I think of him (which is daily).
