History is not fixed. A single event can and usually does have a number of conflicting explanations. As an amateur historian concentrating on US western expansion, I have found many examples of this.
As a side note, I believe we make a major error when we attempt to explain our history in today's concepts. We must look at history in it's own time frame. What was the norms then? What were the common accepted practices? We should also look at history with an open mind.
