Sad that it has come to this, but good citizenship requires eternal vigilance. My Naval Officer dad made me go to summer school before starting high school --- not because I had to, but as an enrichment process. I remember studying touch typing, the science of acoustics and, most memorably, the critical analysis of public speaking. That program taught important lessons about propaganda and political/commercial persuasion. Those lessons were reinforced in studying civics (before it was eviscerated) and in a later public speaking class as well as two separate journalism courses. Ours was not a very emotional assertive family, but there was no doubt in my mind that my dad valued education. Those lessons were reinforced after high school when I would help him study for the baby bar in law school -- he passed and I learned valuable lessons in legal thinking and discourse which helped me as an accountant.
