The author of the Great Society programs which still burden us as a society was an interesting bird TSgt Joe C.. The powerful Senator became POTUS LBJ who was married to his wife Ladybird Johnson.
He was most likely pushed or cajoled into calling for equal rights in 1965.
The irony is that this was 100 or so years after the end of the Civil War which supposedly freed the slaves and restored them to full status as citizens of the USA, on paper anyway.
