CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana I read the article and I am familiar with some of the material. But, what is the lesson about the Line of Control or Cease Fire Line that is relevant to what? What I mean is this, is there a current event concerning the Line if Control?

PO3 Phyllis Maynard Think of it this way. Kashmir was a princely state, independent and sovereign during the pre-1947 era. Kashmir included Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit & Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and Aksai Chin. Then, the British decided to sever India into three parts along religious lines. The Raj formed India today, West and East Pakistan. East Pakistan today is Bangladesh. The Pakistani Army decided that since Kashmir was predominantly Muslim that Kashmir should become part of Pakistan, but India wasn't going to allow this to happen. Prince Hari Singh of Kashmir wanted an independent Kashmir, but Pakistan wouldn't have that either, so Pakistan called in the Afghans with their cannons and tried to force Hari Singh's hand, so Hari Singh turned to India for help. India agreed to counter Pakistan, only if Hari Singh conceded Kashmir to India and Lord Mountbattan advised Hari to accept India's offer, which he eventually did do. India fought Pakistan and pushed the Afghan guns back into Gilgit-Baltistan and that's where the boundary line between India and Pakistan stands today, up to NJ 9642. North of this point was free for all and initially Pakistan occupied it, but post the Kargil War, India had controlled Siachen and Saltoro Ridge too.

Significance: If China and Pakistan attack India into Kashmir, India might win against Pakistan, but India would lose to China. Today, China and Pakistan are allies and this possible squeeze from LAC to LOC and vise versa threatens India. If China attacks India on multiple fronts and Pakistan attacks India from multiple points in the west, India stands to lose a large chunk of itself to both China and Pakistan and this threatens India's existence. Perhaps India can counter and win a nuclear battle against Pakistan, but against China, India stands little chance of survival. The threats are many and the possibilities are plenty, yet the solution is one and that is lacking. PO3 Phyllis Maynard,COL Mikel J. CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana it is true that my current events knowledge is lacking in areas. The back history you gave is great. I remember some 4 years ago a terrible report about that area concerning a chemical discharge that ruined a particular area for human habitation. But that is the extent of my in depth knowledge of the conflict in those areas. However, I have working knowledge of the many fires all over the globe and in particular Middle Eastern status as it relates to active duty personnel. A Pakistani acquantiance expressed much about his home as it relates to the information you posted.

Kashmir is a boiling pot and it has been simmering since 1947 with Pakistan and 1962 with China. Pakistan on the western front and China on the eastern and northern fronts. Pakistan and China are allies today. If these two nations put the squeeze on India, will India concede or will India fight with three corps plus to contain its enemies PO3 Phyllis Maynard ? Do remember the the Crown Jewel of India is in Kashmir and for Hindus in India the Amarnath Cave at Katra, Kashmir is holiest. Equate this to Muslims losing access to Mecca.

I am going to ease off this topic for many reasons. But the history you are talking about is exactly what a former Muslim acquantance talked about, gave me information on and books, as well as a lot of Internet research going back to the Nixon administration. When he affirmed his complete dislike for America (in light of establishing citizenship 30 years ago, votes as a Republican, lives in a poor black neighborhood and collects food stamps, hates American Marines, informed me that the US chemically destroyed his home Gaza Strip, supports Hamas and Hezbollah, and tried to recruit me into Islam because the State of Islam is taking over the world with China and Russia in the cheerleader corner) I viewed the friendship as treasonous and consorting with a potential terrorist cell. So I ceased my association with him to protect my life and stay out of federal prison. I apologize for not being a good contributor, but I will read your posts. Make it a good day.

Again; Capt Christian D. Orr Pakistan and China are allies today and both want Kashmir from India, but India is not ready to concede Kashmir. Pakistan pokes into India from the west and China from the east. Thus far; all conflicts in Kashmir have been conventional, but neither China nor Pakistan has successfully shaved away India. The last option is a nuclear war and that is a threat, but highly unlikely yet. There will be more conventional attacks and perhaps India will get squeezed; perhaps aerial attacks may be introduced, but the terrain is rugged, high and harsh. When it comes to nukes, I feel the UN will step in to control the situation and India can find itself like Korea with a DMZ and a MDL with China and Pakistan. A NNSC will monitor and supervise activities along these lines in the future. For India, such a situation is extremely threatening.

CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana - I hope you're right; I have little faith in the ability of the UN to "control" any situation.

Agreed; the UN sanctioned Armistice Agreement in Korea actually never prevented North Korea from infiltrating into the South and causing problems. North Korea has developed nuclear weapons that can trouble even the US, which proves UN brokered sanctions against North Korea failed to deter the DPRK from being a nuisance. However, the NNSC has maintained a facade of peace in the region till recently Capt Christian D. Orr . Such a facade in India with China might prove successful or useless, time can only tell. It will be a test.
