On April 16, 73, Masada, a Jewish fortress, fell to the Romans after several months of siege ending the Jewish Revolt. What always amazed me was the engineering feats of the Romans. At Masada, the Romans built an earthen ramp to the top of the mesa. It reminded me of Caesar building a bridge over the Rhein, marching his legions across the bridge and back again, and then removing the bridge. This showed that the Romans could cross the Rhein at will if they so chose. Building a ramp to get to Masada definitely showed the native population just how far Rome would go to defeat its enemies and rivals. You can see the ramp in the photos.

Yes, but the Jews were no longer there to be enslaved...and Masada will not fall again

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - No, it was done mostly by the Legionaries themselves, the armies didn't travel with all that many slaves. Most all Roman fortifications and siege works were soldier constructed.
