LTC Greg Henning
This was a local soldier.
Before today…the only other time Bob Hill and I had met was on a chopper in Vietnam as he threw me in…stretcher and all…threw body armor around me and laid on top of me to cover me from the hail of fire and rockets that were trying to destroy that chopper. Bob told me that 2 or 3 choppers had already been blown up trying to get to me and the C Team in Pleiku asked for volunteers to try once more. Bob volunteered. He said it was a mission…just like many other missions…only a lot more enemy…a lot more fire…and artillery…rockets. He laughed as he recalled the ride into Dak Seang as the pilot said, “IF we make it in…you got 10 seconds on the ground…and then I am out of there.” As we met today.. he hugged me once more as he did 48 years ago…only this time…I was able to return the hug…hoping that in that embrace he would be able to tell how much I loved him and was grateful that we were finally able to meet. I believe that in that moment two hearts and two spirits of two soldiers became one…and that oneness is the same shared by all who wear… and have worn… the uniform of this country into battle. God bless you, Bob. DOL
