Army Continues Road Swing in Buffalo,
Air Force Host Nevada
In College Football Week 5
White Plains, N.Y., September 27 -- All three service academy football teams suffered losses last week, but Army and Navy forced overtime and can be encouraged by their performances on the road. Navy has no game scheduled this weekend as it prepares for the first battle for the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy in two weeks against Air Force. Sons of the American Legion Radio previews this week's games.
ARMY (2-2) @ Buffalo (4-0), Sat, Sept 29, 12 p.m. EDT (TV: CBS Sports Network)
Last Saturday, Army stunned the nation by playing nearly flawless football, controlling possession of the ball, holding its opponent scoreless for the entire second half and forcing overtime on the road against No.5 ranked Oklahoma. But the host Sooners scored a touchdown in the extra session to claim a 28-21 win. The Black Knights had little time to dwell on the defeat, shifting attention to undefeated Buffalo for the middle stop of a three-game road swing.
Army has controlled the ball for more than 41 minutes in each of its last three games and will have to continue that dominance if it hopes to stop the Bulls. Under the leadership of junior quarterback Kelvin Hopkins, the Black Knights had scoring drives of 16 plays, 16 plays and 19 plays that demonstrated how the triple option offense is all but impossible to stop if it is executed properly. Hopkins finished the Oklahoma game with 102 rushing yards and 40 passing yards (completing 3-of-9 passes). Kell Walker added a season-high 80 yards rushing while defensive back Elijah Riley led the defense with 9 tackles.
The Bulls crushed Rutgers 42-13 last Saturday. Buffalo is averaging 40.2 points per game and much of that can be attributed to junior QB Tyree Jackson who has already tossed 15 touchdown passes -- exceeding his total for all of 2017. Against the Scarlet Knights, he completed 14-of-28 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite targets are Anthony Johnson and K.J. Osborn are his favorite targets; both have over 300 yards receiving so far this season. Freshman Jaret Patterson rushed for 104 yards -- his first 100-yard game -- and a pair of touchdowns. The Buffalo defense, which has held opponents to an average of 20.2 points per game, is led by Khalil Hodge, who tops the Bulls with 27 tackles (15 against Rutgers), and Chuck Harris (21 tackles).
Nevada (2-2) @ AIR FORCE (1-2) Sat., Sept. 29, 4 pm EDT (TV: ESPNews)
Air Force is coming off a 42-32 loss at Utah State. The Falcons had significant success, posting 471 total offensive yards on a school-record 107 plays. Junior QB Isaiah Sanders started for the second straight game and he completed 9-of-17 passes for 125 yards. Senior Arion Worthman gives the Falcons a solid option at signal caller. Senior wide receivers Marcus Bennett (five catches for 74 yards) and Ronald Cleveland (four catches for 43 yards). Sophomore RB Kadin Remsberg made the first start of his career and finished with 17 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown -- all career highs. Junior fullback Cole Fagan rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. The Air Force defense was paced by defensive back Jeremy Fejedelem (career-high 14 tackles) and linebackers Brody Bagnall (10 tackles) and Blake Dailey (7 tackles in his first career start).
Nevada is averaging 456.2 yards (289.2 passing, 167 rushing) and 40.8 points per game. Quarterback Ty Gangi has completed 84-of-150 passes for 1,073 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Kaleb Fossum (team-high 28 receptions for 348 yards) and McLane Mannix (19 receptions for 358 yards and four touchdowns) are his primary targets. The Wolfpack running game is paced by Toa Taua (41 carries for 331 yards and four touchdowns). Dameon Baber (25 tackles), Gabe Sewell (23) and Lucas Weber (20) lead the Nevada defense, which has allowed opponents to average 454 yards and 39.5 points per game.
