It should not help him, he may have felt frightened but all he had to do was back away from the door, keep his gun trained on the door in case the person he did not know did try to enter that way and call 911.
When inside your home, UNTIL someone makes an illegal entry or does something to threaten your life (fire a shot into your home, set fire to your home, etc) you have no right to a stand your ground defense.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Based upon what I read in the accompanying article from Kcur.org, i don't see any grounds for pursuing a 'Stand Your Ground' defense... I may be wrong, but I would go with the judgement of the Court results...in this case.

Not an Attorney, but there is a difference between "Stand Your Ground" and "The Castle Doctrine". In reality, "stand your ground' simply means that you don't have an obligation to retreat before the use of deadly force. That does not need to be in the home. Castle Doctrine is common law that allows the occupant of a residence (in some states, workplace and auto) that allows protection and immunity for certain requirements for self defense, such as being able to attack an intruder that is inside your home. The news has a habit of using "stand your ground" in cases that it wasn't applicable, Zimmerman comes to mind. If you shoot someone that is physically assaulting you at the time, that is just simple Self Defense

EXACTLY.
The media misuses Stand Your Ground regularly. In some cases the misuse is simple ignorance, in other cases the misuse is deliberate. The left wants to paint SYG as being somehow extreme as part of their anti-gun campaign.
The media rarely attacks "Castle Doctrine" because it is much harder to convince people that defending against an attacker inside your own home is extreme.

Capt Gregory Prickett - I don't disagree with that statement either. The first prosecutor declined to charge him because the available evidence favored the Zimmerman, then the family launched a publicity campaign with photos that left the impression that Martin was 12.
In the current cases, I've worked in Kansas City for a period and not a city known for it's low Crime Rate. Did an 84 year old man panic? Had he been assaulted or his house robbed? I don't remember South Bridge being a horrible crime area, but it was 20 years ago.
