Mother Bison Cuddles Her Newborn Calf, But Has No Clue A Coyote Is Creeping Up Behind Her

Let’s just call it a mother’s intuition.

A female bison had just given birth to her baby. Soon, she realized she had to act quickly and become her newborn’s hero.

In the video below, posted on June 1, 2017, a Yellowstone National Park ranger films as a mother bison fights utter exhaustion to tend to her baby. As she watches over her little one, she has no idea what is creeping up behind her.

A sneaky coyote makes his way over to the bison family, realizing that the newborn is unable to stand on her own. The coyote sees this situation as the perfect opportunity to feed. Unfortunately for him, the fierce predator has underestimated the mama bison.

She musters up the strength to fend off the coyote time and time again. With each attempt to snatch the calf, the determined mom thwarts his efforts and nudges him away.

Soon, the coyote grows tired and gives up, which is surely what the mother was hoping would happen.

The park ranger does not step in during the harrowing battle. Park officials note that “Yellowstone is not a zoo or an animal park. It can be difficult to watch nature take its course, especially when young animals are involved.”

Luckily, the mother bison has it all covered and successfully saves her newborn on her own!
