Names of 2,800 children who died in residential schools documented in registry

My Wife is Canadian Native and her parents, Grand Parents and Great Grand Parents were forced to leave their families and attend Canadian residential schools. The schools forbade the kids to speak their indigenous language, they were forced to learn English and to learn Christianity. They were often punished harshly and sometimes molested, raped and even killed. There are reports of unmarked graves around some residential schools.

Many of you have seen the movie Windtalkers. Windtalkers showed native boys in a residential school setting in New Mexico. They were not allowed to speak their Navajo language until a US Marine officer realized that their unique language could be used to completely dumbfound the Japanese during World War II. Instead of being beaten for their language like what happened in Canada, these US Marines helped win the war and their language became classified for decades. Fast forward to today, 2800 indigenous children and teenagers died in the residential school system. Another 1,600 more have died but they are still being investigated because they don't know their names. Most Americans and many Canadians don't know about the tragedies that happened until just recently. The last residential school closed in 1996. A formal apology was finally given by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008.

My Wife went to day school. She was in the same class with the White/Other Canadian students but she had to wear a uniform and be with the other Indigenous Teens that sat apart from the rest. If she or others in her indigenous group misbehaved, they were hit with a yardstick until they cried.
This punishment was not given to the non-native students. Currently, the Residential School survivors can get a settlement from the Canadian Government but people like my Wife who went to Day school, for the time being, are not entitled to a cash settlement from the Government.
Some of the survivors committed suicide later in life.
