I know an individual who has struggled for years with TBI due to his time in combat. Recently they have used brain mapping to determine which part of the brain was communicating with the other parts. He had undergone a number of treatments and now parts of the brain that were not communicating with each other are now interfacing. He is in a much better state of mind than he was previously. I know this is a simplistic explanation, but it is how I understand what kind of treatments he has gotten.

Great! More screwing around with human brains, AI and computers … what can possibly go wrong?

Not much if you think about it. Perhaps it's because I've been dealing with computers since I started flying in 1968. An airplane is literally nothing but a flying computer and cars are rapidly becoming nothing but a computer on wheels. We trust those to be reliable on a daily basis, do things go wrong, sure, but there's nothing built by humans that doesn't have some type of problem at some point in time.......even the humans that built them. So if computers can help those problems it's a good thing IMO.

I'm all for using computers and technology to improve the quality of life for individuals who suffer physical or mental limitations. I envision a day when neural links can enable patients with spinal cord injuries to regain the use of their bodies.

There is literally an entire movie franchise built around the horrors possible when AI decides to become it's own master however......

If the "SkyNet" or its equivalent really did come into being, why would it have to say anything to us about its inception? I think it would simply act as it wished to act and was able to act. And we poor fools would be crash test dummies. There was a movie long ago called "Colossus - The Forbin Project" which was one of the first unserious explorations of this idea.
