"Gen. Creighton Abrams ... was ordered to avoid such battles in the future."
The politicization of the war was one reason it dragged on so long.

". . .the North Vietnamese retreated to sanctuary areas in Laos." It still rankles that the VC and NVA could retreat into a "neutral" country and avoid pursuit. If a nation provides sanctuary to belligerants, it must forfeit its claim to neutrality.

Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for reminding us that some battles which cost precious lives are seemingly all for naught. The battle within eye shot of Laos for the Ap Bia Mountain which came to be known as “Hamburger Hill” as a meat grinder because it had intense fighting at close quarters which resulted in"597 North Vietnamese were reported killed and U.S. casualties were 56 killed and 420 wounded." As was typical the North Vietnamese waited until we left and then they reoccupied the Mountain.
