So the basic premise here is that gerrymandering districts is the sole reason Republicans are in power. Never mind that this only affects the House of Representatives. It also doesn't explain why the vast majority of Governorships is held by Republicans (33 to 16, with one Independent) either.
Two thoughts on this:
The majority of "voters prefer the basic platform of the Democratic Party. They don’t like increasing wealth disparity, they want access to health-care coverage, they believe climate change is real, they believe in a moderate and humane immigration policy, they support reproductive rights for women, and of course, they support the federal safety net."
Those same voters also like having a job, and less taxes. They like not being a patsy in trade or world affairs. They like not having to pay for the (un)affordable care act.
Say what you want about Trump, but he has a handle on popular issues, and the reason he is in the White House has everything to do with the economic policies that he had, and the vapid campaign his opponent ran.
For those who want to say that gerrymandering is why Republicans hold sway in the House, I would point out that if districts were lined up logically in New York and California, there'd be about a 5-10 seat swing the other way. The truth is the Democrats have done a poor job at the state level in finding good candidates or a decent platform. Lately, the platform seems to be tripping over themselves to offer up more free stuff that they can't possibly pay for. This is not a winning proposition anywhere except where the majority of people already get free stuff from the government that their state can't pay for. Seems to me the plan is to have the federal government assume the burden that ill-conceived state policies can't sustain.

Maj John Bell - I see you, Illinois.
It'll either be there or Puerto Rico first to try a federal bailout, if and when their crummy fiscal policies result in default.
