Almost all of the Electronics Shop was wiped out in one tragic mishap along with two ICs and two ISs. In the Navy, we have almost always berthed by Department because it is more convenient and easier. Do we need to add this to what happened on Fitzgerald to really start thinking about Battle Berthing being a better idea at all times and for all ships? In Fitzgerald, it was a much larger compartment and only 7 died, but with a much more diverse loss in ratings.

Yes, this analysis may look callous, but we need to learn from our tragedies, not relive them. Examine your berthing plan today and see if it's safe.
