Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 9, 1887 nearly an inch of snow fell every hour for 16 hours, impeding the ability of already starving cattle to find food.
I expect this storm may have been part of the impetus for the creation of the highly valuable 1898 stamp "Western Cattle in Storm"
