The unsung hero of the My Lai Massacre was the Chief Warrant Officer that stopped it. CW2 Hugh Thompson landed his OH-23 and had his door gunner cover him while he approached and eventually stopped Calley. The Army tried to ruin his career for his reporting the incident. He retired as a Major.

Thanks SP5 Mark Kuzinski for reminding us that on November 12, 1969 independent investigative journalist Seymour Hersh filed a cable through Dispatch News Service that revealed the extent of the U.S. Army’s charges against 1st Lt. William L. Calley at the My Lai massacre that took place in March 1968.

FYI. Seymour Hersh was an old school reporter who investigated the Military Services, CIA and other government activities in war and peace - "Hersh first gained recognition in 1969 for exposing the My Lai Massacre and its cover-up during the Vietnam War, for which he received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. In 2004, he notably reported on the US military's mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. He has also won two National Magazine Awards and five George Polk Awards. In 2004, he received the George Orwell Award. Some critics have questioned his journalistic integrity."
