HBO Made a great series about the Marines in WWII called (pacific) .It was the story of three Marines. Robert Lecki wrote Helmet for my Pillow. He served in the Infantry at Guadalcanal, New Britian and Pelilu where he got a Purple Heart. Eugene Sledge wrote The Old Breed Black sand. He served at Pelilu and Okinawa. He had trouble adjusting to civilian Life after the war. The third Marine was John Basilone from Raritan New Jersey. He served in the Army 8yrs in the philipines . He joined the marines before the War started . He received the Medal of Honor on Guadalcanal when they were overrun by a larger Japanese force. He kept the Machine guns firing it was dark and he would clear a jammed MG. by feel. Then he was sent stateside to sell war bonds. After a year he trained troops. He wanted to get back into the war. He could have been an officer but he turned it down. He went to Iwo Jima with the 5th Marine division. A couple hrs. after hitting the beach he was killed by mortar fire. This series was Made in Australia and give you a good look at the lives of Marines in WWII. Semper Fi.
