Smithsonian Channel Presents the Battle of Okinawa in Color - Under the Radar

Okinawa was the first battle on an island which Japan considered part of its homeland. As expected the fighting was ferocious - if memory serves me roughly 50,000 US service members were killed and over 100,000 Japanese service members and civilians were killed in the months long fight.
I was saddened when I learned in the 1960s that one of my childhood hero's Ernie Pyle was killed during this campaign in 1945.
