History tends to demonize Franco for accepting help from Nazi Germany. We should not forget that Franco refused to allow German troops to cross Spain to mount an attack on Gibraltar. History also suggests the Spanish "Blue Division," which joined the Wehrmacht in Germany's war against the Soviet Union, was composed of trouble-making radical Fascists who were likely to cause Franco problems at home. Francisco Franco, a 20th Century's villain, was an ultimate survivor; playing one side against the other to keep Spain, a weak nation, free of foreign domination. Even though the U.S. had a post WW II defense pact with Spain, that country wasn't allowed into N.A.T.O. until after Franco's death.
