Remember also Taiwan is a Democracy that elects its public officials. and there is a Welcome sign when I stepped of the airplane at Taipai airport that read, Welcome to Taiwan, Republic of China where Freedom reign for all Chinese. The picture here is with Officer of the Chinese Air Force and I'm in the center with the dark uniform pants. (two tone AF blue Uniform) and two US Cadets that I had escorted on the IACE, International Air Cadet Exchange in 1972 before the US bowed to Mainland China and closed their embassy in Taiwan which never did anything to deserve that. The US had bowed to mainland China in favor of a loyal ally and within that close time range ran out on Viet Nam also with broken promises.
This picture was taken at CCK, Ching Chuan Kang, Air Base, Taichung, Taiwan, ROC

The Communists first leader was Mao Tse Tung. He was one of the founders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the late 1920's. The "democratic" Kuomintang government (Republic of China - ROC) under Chiang Kai Shek was the ruling party of china at the time. A civil war ensued when the communists attemped to take power in China. The CPC temporarily allied with Chiang Kai Shek's forces (ROC) during the Japanese invasion of China in WWII, but resumed their civil war with ROC after Japan was defeated. The Communists drove the ROC off the mainland in 1949, and ROC set up their remaining (democratic) government on the island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa), protected by US forces.
I never understood why the world accepted only the CPC view: Communist China was adament that there could be only "one" China - and it would have to be Communist. I feel the ROC has a right to exist as a sovereign democracy, especially since they have lived totally separate from the communist mainland since 1949. Should the two sides ever decide to "join together" at some date in the future, I'm ok wih that, but it shouldn't be a "requirement" that it can ONLY be communist in make-up.

And some history, can't we solve it by renaming the Island to Formosa?

The reality is mainland China has made large investments in these countries and basically is exerting control via economics instead of by Military action. Burkino Faso, which is in the Eastern portion of Africa and North of Ghana was pressured by the Chinese Communist who now control much of that countries economy. China's investments in the Dominican Republic China exerted the same kind of pressure with the same leverage. Many poor countries are targets of Mainland China to spread their own grip and influence. China knows exactly what they are doing and its purpose is very clear and unchallenged .

China's investment in Taiwan pretty much ended with Chairman Mao's takeover of mainland China and the actual government of the Republic of China resettling to Taiwan which was under US control at the time.
