I met one of these guys in Saarbruecken many years ago, a sad story. A German American he went to Germany on a music scholarship in 1938, the war came, he got drafted and fought until the end in 1945. He reported to a US military government official after being captured, expaining what happened and they threatened to have him executed as a traitor. He tried to clear his name for many years, records were lost and all his appeals were ignored. He eventually married, with 4 children he always dreamed of returning to his native Montana.
