As a former recruiting squadron commander, we saw a lot of young people join for the adventure or just to get away from home. The young people headed to OTS/officer candidates, were for benefits, education and then personal challenges
That was late 1990s, just before 9/11--2001.

Yep I traveled to NTC, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and almost Afghanistan.

Granted it was many years ago and the times were certainly different but I really did join for the discipline and structure,I desperately needed it,the adventure and travel part was a bit intense though!
