Many of my wife's ancestors served on the Metropolitan Police (and others) in and around London from the mid 1800's until the 1970's. Her great grandfather was an office during the Jack the Ripper cases and was on the scene at Catherine Eddowes' murder. We have a cool picture of him in his full regalia as a Bobbie.

Her great grandfather served on the Met up until we sent to fight in WWI as did a number of his brothers.
