The funny thing is that US naval hero Stephen Decatur shot and killed more men in duels than did Masterson. Personal duels among military officers in those days appear to have been more common than western shootouts

Decatur has always been a personal hero. Not many know that one of his first duels was on behalf of a young Midshipman who was forced into a challenge from a very experienced British duelist... Decatur offered to fight in the boy's place, and the British officer decided to back down.
