One mention He make about the magazines being source of malfunctions, that was corrected in our use by loading 18 instead of 20 rounds as the spring within weakened when 20 rounds were loaded. They looked for all sorts of things on the and even added a assist on the M16 to clear jams and ammo feeding problems when hte whole time it was the cheap magazines. I used the M16 in Vietnam and never had a malfunction or jam.

I'm a big fan of the M-16, mine never let me down. I just loaded my mags with 18 rounds instead 20, as was recommended by CPT Juan Colon, who briefed me when I checked into the Cav in '68. And I fired short bursts, instead of fire-hosing the sucker. I thought it was one beautifully-made weapon and was grateful to have it. The Marines I encountered in I Corps made fun of it and called it a "toy rifle" because of the light-weight stock and fore-grip, but they seemed pretty quick to adopt it when they had the chance. The M-14 was certainly a fine weapon, but heavy as sin when humping the boonies.

1LT Voyle Smith I know the I have really nothing the M14 but its just when I hear singing its praises it was over played in many regards. Particularly in the areas of being a designated marksmanship rifle because it was an accurate and even reliable rifle for that role but there was other options out there rhat are better in many ways. Especially today thats one thing I love about rifles today there is much more purpose built wepaons like the MK17 SCAR, MK11 which is the Navy version of the M110, MK18 Close Quaters Battle Rifle, M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle etc only thing I wish they would refine much more because I believe it had potential was the M60 particularly the E6 version I think it would have been much kmore beneficial in Afghanistan then the SAW.

The guy makes a few mistakes. He referred to the rear sight as a carrying handle. Obviously carrying a weapon by a sight will negatively affect the weapon's accuracy. His speaking disparaging of the forward assist clearly indicates his lack of familiarity with clandestine operations in Viet Nam. To load a round you needed to pull the charging handle fully to the rear and release. If you allowed your fingers to "ride" the charging handle back, you are countering the spring and thus the round may not properly load and and/or the the bolt may not lock, preventing the weapon from firing. The forward assist was designed to deal with that problem. But the bigger purpose for me was the noise of a bolt racking. If there were folks around, they could hear that sound and give away your position. So when I was being sneaky I would keep my fingers on the charging handle, slowly and silently allowing a round to barely chamber, but not quite. The forward assist could then be used to quietly complete the task without giving your position away. My M-16s always served me well, although I broke three of them -- one beyond serviceability. That's me plinking with my M-16 at our camp -- showing five pieces of ejected brass in that single frame. Next is SFC Charles Hinson, taken the morning after he rescued me, covered in my blood. The third picture shows me in the Montagnard village with my weapon at my side.

SGT Robert Pryor Thats really badass. I know the pencil brrels were the first design change in future iterations of the m16 we got cold forge hammer steel barrels now. Especially for the M4A1 because there is this weird influence of it being fully automatic even though we never ever use it anyway but hey atleast its there. Thankfully I have never had major malfunction where I needed to use the forward assist I only need eject the mag and rack the bolt back because it almost always was either a bad round or a badly seated round. The only real problem is had was when used blanks especially the M4A1 they for some reasong never jibes well with the bank round and I always had cycle the bolt after a few rounds.
